It is hard to believe we are into May, and March and April have come and gone. We have been a busy class as usual. After spring break the home reading program got underway and the children are all enjoying participating. Each morning they read their book to a classmate before choosing a new book. They are very proud of their progress. In math we have completed a unit on 2D and 3D shapes and have just begun a unit on measurement. In socials we completed a unit on Canada in March and on the environment in April. We concluded our unit on the environment with a trash bash in our neighbourhood last Thursday. The children all pitched in to pick up a substantial amount of garbage. They were all horrified to see the amount of garbage that people carelessly dropped. After our trash bash we went on a lovely hiking adventure which we all thoroughly enjoyed. They were all troopers and did a very good job of keeping up the pace and climbing over logs. We captured lots of lovely photos which you can see here. Lots of eager smiles! In April we participated in an Easter Egg hunt on the playground which was hosted by the grade 7 students. Kendall's brother Zac dressed up as the Easter Bunny to the delight of 41 kindergarten and grade one students. We completed some very beautiful Easter egg artwork which was displayed in the hallway until recently. Our bulletin board is now decorated with our beautiful shaving cream earth paintings. Each student has made a pledge about what they can do to keep our world beautiful. In the past couple of weeks the children have been secretly making their Mother's Day surprises. No peeking! In science our classes have been involved with a mystery growth experiment. They have each planted marigold seeds in a pot of their own and most are up and growing nicely. Looks like a few will have to replant. We have also planted 4 plants that have each been given a different environment. Little Miss sunshine gets to grow in a sunny location and be watered regularly, Dark Vader gets to enjoy being watered but the poor thing has to be kept out of direct sunlight ( the current status of this plant is not so good ), Sourpuss gets to enjoy the sunlight but it is being given water mixed with vinegar ( also not doing well) and lastly, Superhero is basking in the sunlight and being given miraclegrow. The children are recording the growth of each plant. We are paired with schools in Michigan, who are also participating in the experiment and we will skype with them later in May to compare our results. We had a wonderful time at The Big Little Science Centre last week. Thank you to all the parents who helped to drive and have fun with kids. What an amazing place, it was a fun day for all!
